Glossary
Plain-language definitions of terms used across the catalog and documentation. Provided for educational context only — nothing here is guidance for human or veterinary use.
- Peptide
- A short chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds — smaller than a protein. Many research reference compounds in this catalog are peptides.
- Amino acid
- The building-block molecules that link together to form peptides and proteins. Their order defines a peptide's sequence.
- Sequence
- The specific order of amino acids in a peptide, which determines its identity and behaviour in research.
- Lyophilization (freeze-drying)
- A preservation process that removes water from a frozen material under vacuum, leaving a dry "cake" or powder that is stable for storage and shipping.
- Reconstitution
- Dissolving a lyophilized (freeze-dried) material back into liquid form with a suitable diluent, such as bacteriostatic water, for in vitro research.
- Bacteriostatic water (BAC)
- Sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, used as a diluent to reconstitute lyophilized materials. The preservative inhibits bacterial growth between uses.
- Benzyl alcohol
- A mild preservative used in bacteriostatic water to keep a reconstituted solution bacteriostatic (bacteria-inhibiting).
- Certificate of Analysis (COA)
- A document reporting a lot's analytical test results — typically identity and purity — used to verify what a research material is and how pure it is.
- HPLC
- High-Performance Liquid Chromatography: an analytical method that separates a sample's components to measure identity and purity.
- Mass spectrometry (MS)
- An analytical technique that measures molecular mass to confirm a compound's identity.
- Purity
- The proportion of a sample that is the intended compound, usually expressed as a percentage on the certificate of analysis.
- Lot / batch
- A specific production run of a material. Lot traceability lets a certificate of analysis be matched to the exact material supplied.
- In vitro
- Latin for "in glass" — experiments performed outside a living organism, e.g. in test tubes or cell cultures. All materials here are sold for in vitro research only.
- Reference material
- A characterised material used as a standard or comparison in laboratory research, rather than a product for consumption.
- Molecular weight
- The mass of one molecule of a compound, often used alongside purity to plan reconstitution and research calculations.
- Half-life
- The time it takes for half of a substance to be cleared or degraded in a given system — a common parameter in pharmacological research models.
- GLP-1 / GIP / glucagon receptors
- Cell-surface receptors studied extensively in metabolic research. Several catalog compounds are agonists targeting one or more of them.
- GHRH / GHRP
- Growth-Hormone-Releasing Hormone analogs and Growth-Hormone-Releasing Peptides — two classes studied for their effects on the growth-hormone axis in research.
- IU (International Unit)
- A unit of measure based on biological activity rather than mass, used for some compounds (e.g. certain growth-hormone reference materials).
- mcg / mg
- Micrograms and milligrams — units of mass. 1 mg = 1,000 mcg. The reconstitution calculator converts between a target dose and a draw volume.
